Asking for You or Me?

As I was in prayer this morning, of course there was a portion of my prayer time where I made requests to God. Now I didn’t do that off the rip (or at the start). I thanked God and acknowledged Him for who He is first. Then I repented for my sins and also forgave others for sinning against me. I even prayed for them too.

When I got to request portion of my prayers, I sort of had this moment where I paused and thought about what I am asking God for. Have you ever thought about what you’re asking God for? Or a better question is, have you ever thought about why you’re asking God for it?

That’s when I heard Holy Spirit say to me: Will what you are asking for bring Me glory?

Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. — John 14:13-14 CSB

12-13 “In solemn truth I tell you, anyone believing in me shall do the same miracles I have done, and even greater ones, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask him for anything, using my name, and I will do it, for this will bring praise to the Father because of what I, the Son, will do for you. 14 Yes, ask anything, using my name, and I will do it! — John 14:12-14TLB

11-14 “Believe me: I am in my Father and my Father is in me. If you can’t believe that, believe what you see—these works. The person who trusts me will not only do what I’m doing but even greater things, because I, on my way to the Father, am giving you the same work to do that I’ve been doing. You can count on it. From now on, whatever you request along the lines of who I am and what I am doing, I’ll do it. That’s how the Father will be seen for who he is in the Son. I mean it. Whatever you request in this way, I’ll do. — John 14:11-14 MSG

As I meditated on these scriptures and the different translations, I heard Holy Spirit ask me: Are you asking for you or for Me?

I thought for a moment and then I replied: I am asking for you Lord, for your glory. Make me a recipient of your glory Lord.

Having this conversation with the Lord this morning helped me to realize that I don’t want my asks (or requests) to be selfish or all about me. I want them to be all about God and what will bring Him glory. I trust that when I focus on bringing Him glory, He will gladly answer me.

I love how the Message Translation of this scripture says: From now on, whatever you request along the lines of who I am and what I am doing, I’ll do it. That’s how the Father will be seen for who he is in the Son. I mean it. Whatever you request in this way, I’ll do.

The part that stood out is: whatever you request in this way. That lets me know that there is a way to make our requests to God. I am thankful this morning that He clarified the way to ask Him for anything. Definitely know to ask in His name! But know that our requests need to be along the lines of who He is and what He is doing!

Hallelujah to the name of Jesus! It is the name above all names! It is the sweetest name I know! Oh how I love the name Jesus!

P.S. And oh how I just love my Conversations With God! Don’t you?

SALVATION PRAYER

If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and you’re not a believer, but you have a desire to be, all you have to do is openly confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9). When you pray that prayer, you are saved. Get connected with a good, bible-based church in your community, stay connected to other believers, and start having daily conversations through prayer with God every single day. Welcome to your new life with Jesus Christ!!!
