Just Get to the Spot

This morning, I kept seeing this image of Jesus praying. The more I prayed, the more I saw Jesus in this prayer posture. I wrote it down even as I was praying. I was seeing Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.

As I prayed more in the Spirit, I heard Holy Spirit say to me: Show up, surrender, and let me do the rest. Just get to the spot and keep coming back.

I wrote it all down. Then I went to find the scripture with Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane. But before I got there, I used my Blue Letter Bible app to find the scripture and to see how many times the word “prayed” is in the KJV version of the Bible. The word “prayed” occurs in 65 verses! But the one I was looking for was in Matthew 26.

I want to share the entire section of Jesus at the Garden with you.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him. He began to be sad and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sad. I feel close to death. Stay here. Keep watch with me.”

39 He went a little farther. Then he fell with his face to the ground. He prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.”

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray. Then you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”

42 Jesus went away a second time. He prayed, “My Father, is it possible for this cup to be taken away? But if I must drink it, may what you want be done.”

43 Then he came back. Again he found them sleeping. They couldn’t keep their eyes open. 44 So he left them and went away once more. For the third time he prayed the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples. He said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look! The hour has come. The Son of Man is about to be handed over to sinners. 46 Get up! Let us go! Here comes the one who is handing me over to them!”

Holy Spirit highlight several areas to me while studying this text this morning:

  1. Jesus pointed to a spot where He was going to pray. This confirmed what I saw in my image of Jesus praying; and what I heard when Holy Spirit said to me… just get to the spot.

  2. Jesus prayed for an hour because when he came back to the disciples, He said yall couldn’t keep watch with me for one hour.

  3. Jesus prayed 3 times and each time it was the same thing: not what I want, but what you want Father.

As I reflected on what I heard Holy Spirit say and what His Word said, it confirmed that I must keep showing up to pray every day. It confirmed that working my way back to an hour of prayer is right in alignment with God’s Word, and I just need to get to the spot. I was also encouraged by the fact that while Jesus prayed the same thing three times, He surrendered each time to the will of the Father. THAT PART!

We must remember that no matter how many times we submit our requests to our Father God in prayer, it’s His will that we should surrender to, not our own.

SALVATION PRAYER

If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and you’re not a believer, but you have a desire to be, all you have to do is openly confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9). When you pray that prayer, you are saved. Get connected with a good, bible-based church in your community, stay connected to other believers, and start having daily conversations through prayer with God every single day. Welcome to your new life with Jesus Christ!!!
