Who Yo People?

Being from the south, it seems that every knows everyone. If they don’t know you, they will figure out a way to know you. If you have a common last name like Johnson or Williams, you often hear things like, “now do you belong to those Johnson’s out there off of Route 10? People are always trying to see who you belong to or who your people are. What if you just told people you were a King’s kid and you belonged to Jesus Christ?

This morning as I wrapped up early morning corporate prayer (and who knows, I may stick with it), but I went into studying Hebrews chapter 8 for our Scriptural Bible Study (you should have read chapter 7 on your own yesterday because there were some great points to capture), and it hit me as I read what the Lord said in verses 8-12, but specifically verse 10:

This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.

Hebrews 8:10 NIV

In this chapter, aptly titled, The High Priest of a New Covenant, we learn that the system Moses had established was good and done in obedience to God, but it was all preparation for the coming of Jesus, who mediated a better covenant which established even better promises.

What is a covenant? Per my study notes in the Tony Evans Study Bible: A covenant is a special agreement that God makes with his people. It is a divinely created, relational bond through which God reveals himself and administers his kingdom program.

Jesus was the mediator of a better covenant. The new covenant. The one where in Hebrews 8:10, God promised to the house of Israel that he would put his laws into their minds and write them on their hearts. This gives us as followers of Jesus the capacity to experience God and obey him. We all as Christians have this ability, but not all of us have developed it. This goes back to the milk or solids conversation we had a few days ago. Go back and read/listen to that blog/podcast episode.

In this new covenant, the Lord said we will all know him and that he will forgive our wrongdoing and never again remember our sins. We are living in the new covenant. And we should all be waking up early thanking God for his grace shown toward us. I know that I am thankful that He has forgiven me for my wrongdoing and cast it into the sea of forgetfulness. I’m the one who has often times struggled with fishing my past sins out of the sea. But I know that’s just a trick of the enemy who wants me to focus on my wrong, and not focus on the fact that Jesus died for my sins and through the shedding of His blood, I am no longer bound by those sins. I am set free.

Thank you God for the new covenant. Thank you God for the something better that you had when you sent your son Jesus to mediate a better covenant for all of us. Thank you Jesus. Thank you Jesus. Thank you Jesus.

With that praise on your mind and on your lips…now when you’re asked, who are your people, you can respond confidently with Hebrews 8:10: I am God’s People!

SALVATION PRAYER

If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and you’re not a believer, but you have a desire to be, all you have to do is openly confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead (Romans 10:9). When you pray that prayer, you are saved. Get connected with a good, bible-based church in your community, stay connected to other believers, and start having daily conversations through prayer with God every single day. Welcome to your new life with Jesus Christ!!!
